With expressive brushstrokes and pure use of color, Louis Valtat depicts this summer beach scene around 1917. Born in Dieppe in 1860, he became a member of the Ecole des Beaux Arts at the tender age of 17 and studied alongside great painters such as Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. Numerous contemporary artists influenced him, such as Matisse, Vuillard, Bonnard, Signac and especially Renoir, with whom he had a lifelong friendship. Today, his coveted works can be seen in famous collections around the world - such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Madrid) and the Hermitage (Saint Petersburg).
