BORDS DE SEINE À VILLENNES
Oil on canvas.
61 x 50 cm.Signed lower right.
A stretch of bank with wood lying on the ground offers a view through, past trees and shrubs that mark the bushes, down to the Seine, which emerges horizontally behind the trees and gives a view of the opposite wooded bank, in which a small white building becomes visible. In front of it lies a small sanded bank; the viewer's gaze is thus guided through natural growth to an intimate private space embedded in nature, with the trees standing next to the house reflected refracted in the waves of the Seine. As always with Marquet, the brushwork is light but precise, the reflection of the water rendered as impressively as the agitation of the leaves of a birch tree. As a legacy of the Impressionists as well as the Fauvists, the presence of nature can be found right down to such details. (†)
