Port de Cassis Oil on canvas. 60,2 x 81 cm. Signed lower left "Ch Camoin". In magnificent frame. View of the port town with the turquoise green, partly yellowish shimmering water of the bay. On the wide shore path numerous figures and on the water numerous small anchored boats. Densely packed are the houses, some with red shining roofs on the quay, behind it rises a steep mountain range and on the right side in white coloring is an old fortress under the turquoise-blue sky to see. Painting in loose, rapid brushstrokes with partly pastose application of paint, conveying the atmosphere of a summer day. (†) Provenance: Sotheby's, London, June 20, 2018, lot 160. Private collection, France. Madame Luce Hilsum, Paris (acquired by 1950). Note 1: This work is in the Camoin archive, managed by Madame Grammont-Camoin. It was probably created in 1949. Note 2: Cassis is a small port town on the Calanque coast in France, between Marseille and Toulon. Note 3: The French painter is associated with the Fauves circle. He went to Paris in 1896 and studied in the studio of Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), where he also met Albert Marquet (1875-1947). In 1902 he made the acquaintance of Cézanne (1839-1906). Although he joined the Fauves, he was not a convinced Fauvist. (13306061) (18) Charles Camoin, 1879 Marseille - 1965 Paris PORT DE CASSIS Oil on canvas. 60.2 x 81 cm. Signed "Ch Camoin" lower left.
