ChÈvre broutant dans un panier
Oil on canvas.
46 x 65 cm.
Signed indistinctly in the upper right corner.
In ostentatious frame.
Large billy goat in shadowed side view, eating with relish from a basket in front of him. Around him a stable is indicated, on the right side with wall edge, into which the light falls from not visible source of the upper background and partly irradiates the legs of the animal and throws spots on the floor. Painting in rapid, mostly stained, short and broad brushstrokes, in many differentiated shades. The visible and shimmering through beige painting ground is characteristic of Henri Martin and in many places contrasts charmingly with the partly impasto applied coloring. (†)
Provenance:
Sotheby's, London, February 27, 2019, lot 253.
Note:
Henri Martin was a French Impressionist painter; he enjoyed great popularity as a painter during his lifetime, although his work as a Neo-Impressionist is not considered groundbreaking. Over time, he developed a painting style all his own, which emphasized the construction of color, with a more Impressionist brushwork, increasingly allowing free areas to stand out in the division of the picture, as in the present painting.
