View of St. Mark's Square in Venice Tempera on paper. 14,5 x 19,5 cm. Signed lower right "Bison". Behind glass in gilded frame. Picturesque view from the clock tower over St. Mark's Square with St. Mark's Basilica and the Campanile across the Piazzetta with the two columns to the Grand Canal, on which, in addition to gondolas, a large sailing ship can be seen. Numerous figures in elegant contemporary dress circa 1800 stroll through the squares. The sun falls on St. Mark's Square from the right side and casts visible shadows, especially from three tall flagpoles. Atmospheric painting under high sky in warm white-reddish and light blue light of the sun. Detailed fine painting in soft coloring and perfect perspective depth spatiality. The artist was an Italian painter of classicism, he studied in Brescia and was a pupil of Girolamo Romanino Romani (1484/87-1562). Later he moved to Venice and continued his art studies under Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768). From 1834 to 1838 he made a series of trips that took him to Florence, Rome, Naples and Paestum, among other places. With his Venice vedute, Bison established a commercial genre to meet the demand of tourists and collectors. In addition to numerous views of Venice, he also created idyllic fantasy landscapes. In addition to the diversity of his subjects, the high quality of his pictorial production is particularly noteworthy.
