View of Constantinople at sunset Oil on wood. 61 x 79.5 cm. Signed and dated lower right "Jacob Jacobs 1842". In decorative gilded frame. From an elevated vantage point with a shaded ruin of a tower, in front of which a shepherd drives his flock, the view falls into the valley to the city, the blue calm sea with a few ships and to the high, almost entirely yellow shining sky and the sun reflected in the water. On the left side of the painting, a massive fortress with newly built minarets is visible in the background, while in the foreground the city center with Hagia Sophia is visible. On the right edge of the picture, another fortress is reproduced on the hill in the bright sunlight. Only to be discovered at second glance is an armed old man with a long rifle in front of a slightly hidden large cannon and two lying cannon barrels in the shadowed left foreground. Quality picturesque romantic view of Constantinople. Note: Jacob Jacobs was a Belgian landscape and marine painter who painted mainly in the Romantic style, with a preference for Nordic and Oriental scenes. Jacobs studied with Gustaf Wappers and Ferdinand de Braekeleer at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. He continued his studies in Leuven, where he was influenced by the works of Ludolf Bakhuizen and Adriaen van de Velde. In 1838 he set out on a long sea voyage that took him to Gibraltar, Constantinople, and Asian Turkey, among other places. During these voyages, he compiled drawings and notes to serve as inspiration.
