As the son of Frederick Nerly the Elder, Frederick Paul Nerly the Younger was always connected with his native city of Venice, and so motifs such as the one presented here are among the most personal results of his artistic work. In general, Italian motifs were a constant source of inspiration for the painter, whose works are often bathed in a soft evening glow.
