THE SINTFLUT
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
155.5 x 233.5 cm.
In narrow profiled gold molding.
Mannerist depiction of bodies trying to save themselves from the floods to land, some clinging to animals, some to trees, some trying to save themselves to a boat that has just capsized. A brightly lit figure on the upper right side stretching his hands towards God and the sky. The painting compositionally resumes other versions, such as those in the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Gemäldegalerie Berlin, which hardly differ among themselves. This powerful and intense painting, depicted in contrasting light, was created in the last two or three years of Antonio Carracci's life.
Literature:
Cf. Visions du Déluge. De la Renaissance au XIXe siècle, Lausanne 2007, with the composition illustrated there in reverse. The painting is dated there to ca. 1617/18.
Antonio Carracci, Brescia 2017. The comparative examples in Berlin and Munich, illustrated on p. 130. Furthermore, a version from a private collection (possibly the present painting), also illustrated there. (13306227) (10)
