THE HOLY MARGARETHA OF ANTIOCHIA
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
209 x 117 cm.
The saint in an Italian landscape, to her right leaning on an antique pedestal with the motto "Sursum cordir" (Up the hearts). In its landscape composition and figural conception, the painting recalls a Noli me tangere painting by Annibale Carracci, which can be found in the Fondazione Zeri under the number 56086. It also recalls a St. John the Baptist in the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, which is also assigned to the Carracci school. Furthermore, to a Saint Sebastian, in mirror image, in the Fondazione Zeri (53717).
Note:
The legendary martyr was once disowned by her pagan father and denounced to the city prefect. She put her foot on the top of the head of the devil in human form to demonstrate his powerlessness. (13306055) (10)
