Lot and his daughters
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
94 x 78 cm.
In bronzed profile frame.
Attached an expert opinion by Andrea Emiliani, in copy.
A slight silhouette on the left margin locates the depiction of the biblical story: before God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah with sulfur and fire, he commands Lot to flee with his wife and daughters. While Lot's wife freezes into hydrochloric acid as she looks around for the burning city, Lot and the daughters save themselves in a mountain cave. Since there was no man in the land who could have given the daughters offspring, the women make the father drunk, lie down with him and become pregnant (Gen 19:30-38). Here Lot is already holding on to one daughter backwards, while the other is standing and filling a tazza with wine, which she pours from a blue and white faience jug. (13303416) (2) (13)
