BACCHANAL Oil on canvas. 96 x 107 cm. Under a white and blue sky a merry company of partly lightly dressed men and women celebrating with wine, which is drunk from the jug directly, as on the left side of the picture by a half-kneeling, almost naked man, or from bowls, as in the case of the two women lying on the ground in white blouses in blue, respectively in red robes. A man in white clothing holds up a glass pitcher and examines the red wine it contains. No one seems to be bothered by the small child urinating between the recliners with his shirt pulled up. On the right a dancing couple: she in a light blue robe, he in back view with an old pink robe with rich drapery. In the foreground on the right, a young beauty, wrapped only in a white sheet, lolling on the floor. It is Ariadne, with whom the god of wine Bacchus fell madly in love and whom he had chosen as his bride. This beauty is very often presented with different interpretation in paintings by Poussin. Above, lying on a hillside, the drunken, sleeping Bacchus in front of a wooden ship's hull, probably Noah's Ark, which is being built on Mount Ararat. In the center of the picture a small white sailing ship can also be seen. Figure-rich, partly humorous depiction of the well-known artist, who probably put together here representations from the Bible and mythology and presented in fresh bright colors. It remains to mention that the artist here takes up a theme after Titian. (13306116) (10) Nicolas Poussin, 1594 Villers - 1665, attributed BACCHANAL Oil on canvas. 96 x 107 cm.
