Bearded old man
Oil on canvas. Doubled.
77 x 67 cm.
Upper right possibly remains of a signature.
In ornamental relief frame.
In front of an unspecified background, whose beige-gray camaieu is designed in the same colors as the head, but less differentiated, a torso in fur-trimmed coat turned to the right, in the center the downward-facing head of an old man with a beard projecting far into the picture space, whose individual hairs can be seen quite as in Rembrandt as a light duct. The wrinkles of the skin are masterfully recognizable, carefully modeled and emphasize the wise aura of the sitter, who is possibly to be thought of as an apostle. Bernhard Schnackenburg determined the artist to our consignor not as Lievens, but as a workshop work of a Rembrandt student.
Provenance:
1964/1965 acquired by the father of the consignor in the Dutch art trade, since then in family possession and a newcomer on the art market since the 1960s.
Note:
The present portrait can be compared roughly with the Apostle Peter by Rembrandt in the National Museum in Stockholm (Inv.No. NM 1349). (1330671) (13)

BEARDED OLD MAN
Oil on canvas. Relined.
77 x 67 cm.
Possible remains of a signature top right.
Provenance:
Acquired in 1964/1965 on the Dutch art market by the father of the current consignor, family-owned ever since and a newcomer to the art market since the 1960s. Bernhard Schnackenburg did not confirm the artist as Lievens to the current consignor but as a workshop work by a Rembrandt pupil.
Notes
The present portrait compares well with the The Apostle Peter by Rembrandt held at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm (inv. no. NM 1349).
