Ascent to Calvary Oil on copper. 70 x 87 cm. Under high sky, in the light of the setting sun, Jesus, fallen under the weight of the heavy wooden cross, ascending the high Calvary covered with trees. He wears a long robe, is pulled vigorously by the hair of a thief and looks out of the painting with his pale face. He is surrounded by numerous figures: behind him Simon of Cyrene, who helps him to lift the cross again and another helper, a soldier on horseback, who demands him to stand up with lance, furthermore soldiers in armor, the two other condemned, as well as a troop riding ahead of them. While the left side of the picture is almost completely taken up by the mountain and the figures, on the right side of the picture the view falls into the wide landscape with the city under a high sky. On the ground half kneeling Veronica, who wants to hand Jesus a white sweat cloth, behind her two small children and at the edge of the picture Mary in a long blue robe with John. Painting with recognizable division into two parts: The left side of the picture shows the influence of a vertical work by Rubens, in whose painting, however, Veronica is also depicted. Quality painting in partly strong coloration with skilful chiaroscuro staging. Note: The painting "The Ascent to Calvary" by Peter Paul Rubens, dat. 1634-1637, oil on canvas, 560 x 350 cm is in Brussels, Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique, Musée d'Art Ancien, Inv.No. 374.
