Tarquinius and Lucretia Oil on canvas. Doubled. 150 x 120 cm. In gilded and plastic decorated frame. Lucretia lies on her bedstead, her body describing a descending diagonal, to which further ascending diagonals are compositionally opposed, describing the opposite of tranquility. Both the gaze emanating from her, her hand directed upward by Tarquinius, and also his sword serve the purpose of underscoring the dynamics of the momentary terror. Literature: The work offered here is listed in the monograph on Pietro and Marco Liberi by Ugo Ruggeri: Pietro e Marco Liberi. Pittori nella Venezia del Seicento, Rimini 1996, p. 155, no. p90. Note: The story of Lucretia and her suicide in 510 BC is told by Titus Livius, Ovid as well as Boccaccio. Tarquinius was subsequently killed and the event is considered to have triggered the founding of the Roman Republic.
