The birth of Jesus with the adoration of the angels
Oil on wood. Partly parquet.
62 x 45.5 cm.
In decorative aedicular frame rounded at the top.
Night piece with the birth of Jesus, but instead of a simple stable shifted to the ruins of a formerly magnificent architecture with narrow columns and round arches, showing the view of the night sky with a yellowish streak of light in the center and right. In the foreground the lying naked boy Jesus with raised hands, from which light seems to emanate, illuminating not only the face of Mary kneeling in front of him in a dark blue long robe, who holds her hands protectively over him, the light also captures the angels kneeling behind the newborn in magnificent robes and large wings, and partly the multitude of angels still approaching from heaven on the right side of the picture. Behind Mary stands Joseph in a wrinkled red robe, holding a lighted candle in his left hand; hovering above him are two more angels, rejoicing and singing. From a window two shepherds look down on Jesus, only dimly can also be seen ox and donkey to the side of Mary. Fine quality painting, rich in figures, in which the light particularly emphasizes the main figures. (13307013) (18)
