The Madonna with the baby Jesus and
John the Baptist
Oil on wood.
113 x 83 cm.
Framed.
The figures occupying the painting almost entirely in close-up before a large light brown tree stump. The seated Madonna in old pink robe and light blue wrinkled mantle covering her legs. She wears as headgear a beige cloth reaching to the neck and has around her head also a radiant nimbus. She holds with the tender slender fingers of her right hand the naked Jesus boy sleeping peacefully at the side of her lap, whom she looks lovingly at. This one has golden-blond curly hair, a small snub nose and slightly reddened cheeks, his left arm stretched out lying on the Madonna. With her left arm stretched slightly backwards, the Madonna holds back the boy St. John, dressed only in a light fur robe, who holds some flowers in his right hand, preventing the sleeping man from being awakened. Fine sensitive representation in soft harmonious coloring with special emphasis on the clothing of Mary and the fine incarnate of the sitter.
Note:
The depiction of the Madonna with the boy Jesus and John is found several times in the work of the artist, the Madonna often in a delicate old pink robe and the figures in each case large format in close-up.
The artist was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, who was mainly active in Florence. He was a student of Ridolfo Ghirlandaio (1483-1561). The artist Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) took note of his skills. Portelli painted several altarpieces for churches in Florence, including the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. (1330362) (4) (18)
