Portrait of a young architect Oil on strong poplar wood panel. 70,5 x 51 cm. In old frame. The youth shown in half-length portrait to the right, in front of a restored largely reworked room back wall with fluted half-column and added window view. On the right a red curtain drawn back. The sitter in a bright red embroidered dress with a black cape and red cap, a headgear often seen on artists' portraits in this period. The right hand demonstratively holds a compass, documenting his profession as an architect. Further clues to his biography or sphere of activity are a vertically striped coat of arms on the window sill on the right, as well as the medallion on the cap depicting St. George. The coat of arms is that of the Lombard-Milanese Trivulzio family and may indicate that the sitter was in the service of one of these patrons who ruled Cremona, Padua, etc. during this period. The medallion may be related to the sitter's first name "Giorgio". The painting style may be reminiscent of the Raphael succession due to the head posture, but this does not apply to the other details. Heavily rest., erg.
