PEDER MØRK MØNSTED (Grena 1859-1941 Copenhagen) River landscape. 1907. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower right: T Mônsted. 1907. 70.3 × 101 cm. Provenance: - Macconnal-Mason, London (label on verso). - European private property, acquired from Obiger. Peder Mønsted is one of the most pioneering landscape painters in Denmark around 1900. At the beginning of his training, he attended the Prince Ferdinands Drawing School in Aarhus, where he studied with Andreas Fritz (1828-1906), a landscape and portrait painter. Between 1875 and 1879 he studied at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen under Johann Julius Exner (1825-1910), who shaped his skill in figure painting. It was here that he met, among others, Peter Christian Thamsen Skovgaard (1817-1875), a painter of Danish Romanticism, whose artistic influence can be found in Mønsted's landscape depictions. Again and again Mønsted undertook numerous study trips, among others to Switzerland, Italy and North Africa. In 1883 he spent four months in Paris, where he worked with William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905). Mønsted, who is especially known for his depictions of Danish landscapes and coasts, transfers his romantic and poetic view of nature to the painting medium with a remarkable eye for detail. This is also the case in this composition, which fascinates with its multifaceted play of light.
