"This is a portrait of a child as Adam Töpffer painted them in his old age in Morillon near Geneva. On his son-in-law's estate of the same name (which was next to today's Ariana Museum; see inscription on reverse), the painter had a studio since the 1820s where he lived and painted in the summer. This portrait with the formative frontal look of the young girl is comparable with some similar children's portraits, which Adam Töpffer painted especially also of his grandchildren. [...] The reference to the provenance of Sayous further confirms this Töpffer context, as the former owner Jeanne Sayous (ca. 1870-?) was the granddaughter of Töpffer's good friend and brother-in-law Etienne Sayous (ca. 1756-?)" (quote from the expert opinion of Lucien Boissonnas).
