WILLIAM ETTY
(1787 York 1849)
Female nude with red scarf.
Oil on wood.
45.2 × 31.2 cm.
Provenance:
Swiss private property.
William Etty already worked in the evening in the nude drawing room of the Royal Academy during his studies as well as during his further artistic career, where many of his studies of nude models were created. In his studio, these were later refined with draperies, specific details and backgrounds to eventually create a complete and saleable work. Richard Green assumes that our depiction was also probably created at the Royal Academy and then finally revised later in the studio. Not infrequently, these additions were completed by other artists. The female nude with a red gown assumes a pose typical of the Salon, with one arm raised above her head. The sitter is thereby characteristically staged by powerful bright lighting from above.
We would like to thank Richard Green for confirming the authorship by means of photographs and for his scientific assistance with the catalog entry.
