Literature:
Wolfgang Schulz: Aert van der Neer, Doornspijk 2002, p. 269, cat. no. 566, fig. 159 (as "probably authentic").
This moonlight landscape contains all the elements of a characteristic work of Aert van der Neer and impressively demonstrates his ability to render the vastness of an evening Dutch river landscape in convincing perspective atmospherically and in reflective light. Night landscapes bathed in moonlight were among Aert van der Neer's particular specializations. The depiction of nocturnal scenes enjoyed particular popularity in the 17th century, and the in-depth exploration of the nocturnal can also be found in poetry.
The painting offered here can be compared stylistically with the landscape dated 1646 in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (inv. no. SK-A-3245; see Schulz 2002, cat. no. 250, fig. 126).
