The painting offered here is based on a composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder, which is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (inv. no. A76) and forms part of a series of allegorical representations of the four elements (see Klaus Ertz and Christa Nitze-Ertz: Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), Lingen 2008-2010, vol. III, cat. no. 495, p. 1044).
