JAN BRUEGHEL the Elder, successor of the 18th c. (Brussels 1568-1625 Antwerp) Allegory of water. Oil on copper. 29 × 45,5 cm. Provenance: - private collection Count Johan Ludvig Holstein (1694-1763). - By inheritance through several generations, private collection Count Knud Holstein-Ledreborg (1919-2001). - By inheritance, Swiss private collection. The painting offered here is based on a composition by Jan Brueghel the Elder, which is in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (inv. no. A76) and forms part of a series of allegorical representations of the four elements (see Klaus Ertz and Christa Nitze-Ertz: Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625), Lingen 2008-2010, vol. III, cat. no. 495, p. 1044).
