(1471 Nuremberg 1528)
Christ in Limbo. From the great woodcut Passion. 1510.
Woodcut on laid paper with watermark. Crowned double eagle with A and the letters HG (similar to Meder 228, from 1585-1613).
Monogrammed and dated in the printing block.
39.7 x 28 cm. Framed.
Bartsch 14; Schoch/Mende/Scherbaum ; Meder 121, editions after 1511, without text, probably b (from d, before the 1675 edition). - Nice, strong, mainly even and clear impression with small margins around the border line. This is partly strengthened or supplemented with black pen. The front side partially browned, the back side more browned. The centerfold is backed with old Japan paper, closing some fine breaks in the paper. Few thin spots, a small closed hole in the upper part of the robe of Christ. Overall still in good condition.
