In-12°. Full contemporary seeded calf. Smooth spine decorated with gilt caissons and fleurons (old restorations). Red morocco title-piece. Triple gilt fillet on the boards. Red edges. The first board has a cracked jaw (solid binding) and the head cap is damaged. Without the false title of the second volume which was not bound in the copy.
First edition of this successful novel which caused a scandal at the time.
