NORTH GERMAN-LOWER RHENISH MASTER OF THE LATE 15TH CENTURY TWO RETABLES WITH THE ANNUNCIATION TO MARY AND SCENES FROM JOSEPH'S LIFE Oil tempera on oak panel. Each: 45.5 x 36.5 cm (f. 52 x 43 cm). Verso: Scenes from the Life of Joseph on the reverse. Very good condition due to age, dirty surface, one panel with vertical longitudinal crack, min. dam. slight paint bulges and min. paint losses. Frame. We are gratefull to Dr. Bernd Konrad for his help in deciphering the two plates. Dr. Konrad points out that the visit of the angel to the house of the Holy Family is very rarely expressed in pictorial reproductions. In his opinion, the motif alludes to Joseph's doubts, according to which an angel appeared to him in a dream while Mary was still pregnant, whereupon they were married. Provenance: South German private collection. Sign(10)NORTH GERMAN-LOWER RHEINISH MASTER OF THE LATE 15th CENTURY.
