Oil on canvas bearing on its frame an old handwritten label "Presumed portrait of Mrs CHALGRIN born Marguerite Émilie PULCHÉRIE VERNET daughter of the painter Joseph VERNET, wife of the architect CHALGRIN. Denounced by the painter DAVID by hatred of her father or as a result of a disappointed passion, she died on the scaffold at the age of thirty on the sixth of Thermidor II.
