A 17th-18th century sailor's chest.
Wood, with polychrome lid inside.
Original lock.
It shows wear due to use and the passage of time. With faults in the wood and in the polychromy.
Measurements: 48 x 95 x 50 cm.
The "sailor's" chest was used by sailors to store their belongings during their long voyages at sea. This chest has a hand-painted scene on the inside of the lid: a country celebration or feast, featuring two peasant women and a man, which could also be interpreted in a symbolic sense as allegorical figures singing of spring or invoking the renewal of the cycle of the seasons. The shape of the piece is rectangular except for the lid, the outer side of which is domed. The side handles are also made of wood, covered with rope.
