Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin, presents in her interior the image of her daughter as Immaculate, with white tunic and blue mantle that show the values of Christianity, while she is visited by the Dove of the Holy Spirit. This theme was very common, especially in the 16th century as a result of the Counter-Reformation, as Protestants questioned Mary's virginity and her role as intercessor before God. Marian themes were therefore particularly cultivated by artists in Catholic countries. Hence the Immaculate Conception became so fashionable, and numerous scenes related to the Virgin's life were produced.
