Albert BRENET (1903-2005)
Bedouin camp in the Tunisian south
Gouache signed lower right
70 x 106 cm
Albert Brenet was not yet 33 years old when he was officially appointed Painter of the Navy. Traveling artist, Brenet criss-crosses the seas of the world on different ships, making sketches, oil paintings, gouaches of ships, ports but also scenes of the life of the crews. He always painted on the spot. Wherever he stopped, he was as interested in landscapes as in street scenes or individuals. These successive trips will increase his taste for beautiful harmonies of color.
He painted a considerable body of work, the variety of which is a wonder, combining exceptional speed of execution with a characteristic precision of line. His look is always precise and it is with an astonishing spontaneity, a certain warmth and simplicity that he paints his subjects. Friend of Marin Marie this last said of him "it is disgusting!

This painting represents the memory of a beautiful moment captured in the South Tunisian desert: a Bedouin camp, the large family tent, the children, the women and their household chores and this colorful spinner. This work was part of the artist's collection until 2004 before remaining in a private collection.
