He thanks his friend who has sent him letters from Philadelphia, and tells him about his journey on foot from Lyon to the Carthusian monastery of Sainte-Croix: "I crossed some interesting mountains and all along my way I catechized the peasants. I saw the national guard of a village called Longes, one league from this monastery; and I learned with satisfaction that the municipality of this village had just spent L 1500 - to arm its citizens. I did not cease to invite everywhere to do the same and I dare to believe that my patriotic mission will not be without fruit ". The news of his friend saddened him: "When I said to you in the Society of the Oath of the Palm game, that while one was intoxicated of the spirit of festival of the day of the federation, the wise ones were to collect themselves and to make walk ahead the various parts of the public thing, you did not want to believe me! See how we're doing! I don't receive any news from our Society for the Equality of Divisions. It is, however, an object of great importance; you will have seen in Charbonnel's letter what they think of it in Philadelphia. No agreement, no union, even among the patriots who are not divided. He wrote a very long letter to the deputy Lamétrie about Lyon: "Try to see him and press the journalists to thunder, taking advantage of the important lights that we have collected"...
