SIND (Johann Baptist von). Manual of the rider, which contains the necessary knowledge to keep the horse in health, & to cure it in case of disease. Second edition, revised, corrected, considerably increased, & with figures. Paris, G. Desprez, 1766.
In-12, xij-248 pp, [2] ff. of privilege, with 3 plates out of text, marbled fawn basane, smooth spine decorated, red edges (period binding). Lacks of leather at the edges, foxing.
As there is no French edition prior to ours, it must be assumed, as Mennessier does, that the first one, reported on page v of the warning for the year 1761, is in fact the German original. Born in Moravia, Johann Baptist von Sind (1709-1776) had served in the Austrian armies, before becoming first squire to the Elector of Cologne, combining the skills of a horseman and a veterinarian. (Mennessier de La Lance II, 514.)
