4 vol. in-8, black half-chagrin, spine with cold box (period binding).
Second edition, uncommon, of Tocqueville's masterpiece, a major work of political thought of the 19th century.

In 1835, after returning from a study mission on the prison system of the United States, Alexis de Tocqueville published the first two volumes of his work, in which he described American political society. It is only in 1840 that the two following volumes devoted to the civil society appeared.
Good copy in uniform binding. Stamp of H. Tisseron on the titles, and number at the foot of the spine. Handwritten annotations of the time p.155 of the first volume. Small spotting and foxing, more pronounced in some parts, corners rubbed.
