French school around 1820 Pauline mourning the departure of her husband Polyeucte sent to the torture by Felix Oil on canvas 186 x 251 cm With a dismantled molded oak frame. Provenance : Breton manor Cracks, restorations and missing parts. Canvas enlarged by 24 cm on the left side. Faithful to neoclassical doctrines and the illustration of Roman virtues, our painting presents Pauline, mourning the departure of her husband Polyeucte sent to the torture by Felix, a subject characteristic of neoclassicism. The frieze composition is skilfully studied and the ingenious distribution of light illuminates a graceful arrangement of the characters like a play, recalling that the subject is taken from Pierre Corneille's tragedy, Polyeucte martyr (1641).
