Faithful to neoclassical doctrines and the illustration of Roman virtues, our painting presents Pauline, mourning the departure of her husband Polyeucte sent to the torture by Felix, a subject characteristic of neoclassicism. The frieze composition is skilfully studied and the ingenious distribution of light illuminates a graceful arrangement of the characters like a play, recalling that the subject is taken from Pierre Corneille's tragedy, Polyeucte martyr (1641).
