"Dear Sir, I thank you sincerely for sending me the Monte Carlo concert program. As for your request to come and play in A SYMPHONY CONCERT IN PETERSBURG, I would advise you to address yourself to Mr. CESAR CUI, the director of the Musical Society, which gives these concerts. I have no connection with these concerts. It would give me great pleasure to know that your commitment has been fulfilled and I hope to meet you in with you in Petersburg. Please accept, Sir, the assurance of my most distinguished consideration. [Nicolas Rimsky-Korsakow. 25 March 1899. St. Petersburg." The composer and conductor Camille Erlanger was to conduct in Monte Carlo on April 13, 1899 two "tableaux" of his "dramatic legend" Saint-Julien l'Hospitalier composed after Gustave Flaubert's tale.
