Shrine figure called Arugba Shango. The numerous deities of the Yoruba were rarely represented figuratively, but each had its own symbolism. The symbol of the thunder god Shango was the axe.
His shrine therefore contained such "axes": prehistoric throwing projectiles found while farming and thought to be thunderbolts hurled by Shango. These found objects were usually kept in bowls on carved female shrine figures or in the vessel of a bowl-bearer: such female representations were identified as priestesses or worshippers of Shango or his favorite wife Oya.
