A BARBARIAN'S HEAD
White marble; restoration to the nose Dim 16 x 16 cm
Roman art, 2nd - 3rd century
Probably belonging to a large sarcophagus, like the Portonaccio sarcophagus in the
Portonaccio preserved in the Museo Nazionale Romano in Rome. This wonderful relief
represents a bearded man with long wavy hair and an intense look
probably a prince or a barbarian nobleman who was the first to experience the
marcoman wars.
A roman marble relief of a Barbarian. Antonine period, ca. Second half of the 2nd
century A.D. Probably belonging to a big sarcophagus, as the Portonaccio sarcophagus
preserved in the Museo Nazionale Romano, Rome. This marvelous relief depicts
a bearded man with long wavy locks and intense gaze; probably a Barbarian
prince or nobleman which experienced firsthand the Marcomannic Wars.
