"The adoration of the shepherds". Carved and polychromed wooden relief. Italian School. 16th - 17th century. _x000D_
60 x 180 x 5,5 cm. _x000D_
Magnificent, large relief that narrates the scene in which the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph, accompanied by three angels, contemplate the Baby Jesus as he lies in straw in the stable where he was born. They receive the visit of the shepherds who, kneeling and in a reverent attitude, present their offerings. _x000D_
The background reproduces the simple structure that shelters them, made up of slats carved into the wood, and a door on the left side, which gives perspective to the whole. _x000D_
Of great sculptural quality, as we can see in the elaborate clothing of the shepherds, the different expressions and magnificent facial features. Likewise, the artist gives great vividness and realism to the scene, showing us the mule eating fodder; the shepherds are in different positions, some looking towards Jesus, others approaching, and on the right side of the scene there is even a shepherd turning his head towards the last one who stands, holding a basket with birds. _x000D_
The lower edge is completely adorned with delicate sgraffito of flowers.
