This expressive study is reminiscent of the light and shade of Diego Velasquez's painting, which the artist studied when he arrived in Madrid from the United States and then in the studio of Carolus-Duran in Paris. A talented portraitist, Dannat was acclaimed in the Salons, where he received several prizes. He taught at the same time as his painting career at the Julian Academy.
