This lithograph illustrates five pigeons on a wire carrying messages against the swallow, which stands alone, at the other end of the wire. The pigeon is a native bird that does not migrate, unlike the swallow that migrates every year to Africa. This work is a positive vision of immigration, and presents the migrant, represented here by the swallow, as an enrichment for the English nation.
