THREE BLACK-PAINTED VESSELS IN THE STYLE OF GNATHIA
DATE: 4th cent. bc.
MATERIAL AND TECHNIQUE: Pinkish figulina clay, shiny black paint with metallic highlights, subpaintings in white, yellow, and paonazzo; molded by fast potter's wheel
Epychisis with human protomes at the spout attachment, decorated from the neck with Ionic kyma, continuous meander, chain of whorls and large band of vine leaves and grape bunches followed by a chevrons motif ; a skyphos with straight rim, truncated conical body, molded foot, ribbon-like handles set horizontally below the rim, decorated with Ionic kyma, large band of vine leaves and grape clusters; jug with trefoil rim, cylindrical neck, ovoid body, molded foot, ribbon-like handle, set from rim to shoulder (3)
PRODUCTION: Apulian pottery in the style of Gnathia
STATE OF CONSERVATION: intact, damaged handles of the skyphos
