History :
In 1856, Princess Alexandra GOLITSYNE (1831-1900) - founder of the Russian Society of the Sisters of Mercy, patron and benefactor - established in her Moscow family estate a church of the Mother of
God Joy of All the Afflicted. From 1865, a shelter for pilgrims and itinerant nuns and a hospital for women were added. The Golitsyne convent continued to grow until, on September 6, 1889, the Most Holy Synod in St. Petersburg granted it official status as a Cenobitic Female Monastery. In 1929, almost all the monastic buildings were destroyed, only the facade of the Church of the Savior
can still be seen on Novoslobodskaya Street in Moscow.
