English school; circa 1900. "Landscape. Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 26 x 35,5 cm; 39 x 49 cm (frame). The English landscape school has its origin between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, as a result of Canaleto's stay in London. The new concept of the "picturesque" emerged, that which was worthy of being painted, and artists, both professional and amateur, took to the countryside to paint in the open air with watercolour, a discipline which was to become the English national trademark from that time onwards. English artists successfully adhered to the pre-Romantic and Romantic aesthetic, seeking out places that triggered emotion, memory and sensation, where nature was a source of mystery. This landscape is fully in keeping with this trend, which sought to capture on canvas the real, authentic England that only memory is incapable of retaining and immortalising. In the 19th century the art market expanded considerably and genre painting, especially landscape painting, enjoyed great success in bourgeois circles. The generalisation of plein air painting, moreover, encouraged artists' interest in landscape painting.
