ANTONIO CABA CASAMITJANA (Barcelona, 1837 - 1907). "Lady in the Drawing Room", 1875. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated on the back. Measurements: 59 x 43 cm; 88 x 61 cm (frame). Painter and decorator born in Barcelona, Antonio Caba began his studies in the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, where he had as teachers Gabriel Planella, Pablo Milà Fontanals and Claudio Lorenzale. He then furthered his studies in Madrid thanks to a pension granted to him by the Diputació de Barcelona in 1863. There he was a pupil of Federico de Madrazo. He subsequently travelled to Rome and Paris, furthering his training as a pupil of the fresco painter Carlos Ruiz Delaroche. Throughout his career Caba submitted his works to numerous official exhibitions and was awarded the second medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1864 and the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888. He taught for many years, first at the Llotja School in Barcelona and later at the Academies of San Fernando in Madrid and Sant Jordi in Barcelona, where he taught, among others, the Impressionist painter Eliseu Meifrèn. At San Fernando he was an assistant professor, and at Sant Jordi he became a professor and director of the academy. His work is currently held in the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, the Museo de L'Empordà, the Town Hall of Perelada (Gerona) and the Abbey of Montserrat, as well as in various private collections.
