ARTUR CARBONELL CARBONELL (Sitges, Barcelona, 1906 - 1973).
"Young Man with a Lyre", 1963.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated in the lower right corner.
Size: 166 x 80 cm; 169 x 82,5 cm (frame).
This young woman with a lyre is wrapped in an ancient and mythical patina, as if she were Eurydice waiting for her Orpheus. A painter, stage designer and theatre director, Artur Carbonell was an active participant in the surrealist movement. He made his work known through the magazine "L'Amic de les Arts", and made his debut in 1930 at the Galaerías Dalmau in Barcelona, presented by Sebastián Gasch. Between 1930 and 1936 he presented contemporary and classical plays in Sitges and Barcelona. In 1940 he was appointed professor at the Institut del Teatre in Barcelona, and the following year he resumed directing and decorating theatrical shows. Carbonell's works present backgrounds that suggest spaces, isolated forms of transparent volumes and marked lines, in mechanical equilibrium. He is represented at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Maricel in Sitges.
