Antwerp : Martinus Nutius, 1620 - Fort in-8, havana calf, double gilt fillet on the boards, spine with ornate nerves, red edges (18th century binding).
First edition of this famous mystical book composed by the Jesuit Father Antoine Sucquet (1574-1627).
This work, reprinted many times, is characterized by its rich illustration finely engraved in intaglio by Boèce a Bolswert, including a title-frontispiece and 32 plates. The scenes that these engravings represent, show torments, martyrdoms, etc., often embellished with imaginary and monstrous creatures.
A copy in an 18th century binding, restored to the headpieces, the spines and the corners. Margins a little short, with damage to several current titles. The first two leaves of the text have a shorter margin. Sparse spotting.
Provenance: eighteenth-century handwritten bookplate crossed out on endpapers. - Brussels library label.
