Venice: Giovanni Battista Ciotti, 1602. - In-4, red morocco, double framed with gilt roulettes and gilt fleuron at the corners of the inner frame on the boards, smooth spine decorated with filigree quatrefoils, inner gilt roulette, gilt edges (binding around 1650).
Definitive edition considered as one of the best of this famous pastoral by the Italian poet and diplomat Giovanni Battista Guarini (1538-1612).
Dedicated to Vicenzo I, duke of Mantua and Monferrato, it is illustrated with a very beautiful engraved title and 6 very beautiful full-page engraved compositions by Francesco Valesio. The portrait of the author is missing.
A good copy in later morocco, probably before 1650. Worm work with missing lower spine, cracked hinges, one corner dull, some rubbing and scratches. Missing first white endpapers, marbled paper of the linings torn in places. Some light wetness. Old handwritten correction to the last 5 verses of act 1, scene 3, folio 34 recto.
