L.A.S. "Victor Hugo," Hauteville house April 22, 1866, [to Adolphe ROYANNEZ]; 1 oblong page in-12 (cracks in fold).
To a proscribed journalist.
"Your idea is excellent. I applaud it with both hands. I am sending you the one of my books that is most suitable for all ages and sexes. Believe in my cordial sympathy for your useful journal and your generous spirit."
On the back, autograph certificate signed in 1904 by Clovis HUGUES (1851-1907): "I declare that this letter of Victor Hugo, offered by me to my friend Broussouloux, was found in the papers of Royannez, my father-in-law, friend and master in socialism. It is the first time that I arrive before Hugo; but it is the obligatory return of the sheet which is responsible for it before the posterity".
Attached is the article Victor Hugo to Louis
Bonaparte, Jersey [April 8, 1855], 6 clippings (5,5 x 20 cm) mounted on a double sheet, with an autograph correction in the margin. Open letter written in the context of a visit of Napoleon
III to Queen Victoria. Victor Hugo feared, with reason, that the new agreement between the two countries would be to the detriment of the outcasts of Napoleon III's regime who had taken refuge in Jersey where he himself was.
