Our painting is a first thought for the decoration of the main staircase of the Opéra Comique in Paris (Salle
Favart) around 1897/1898.
The preparatory drawing for this first sketch is kept in the Anne-de-Beaujeu museum in Moulins
(reproduced in the catalog of the exhibition "L'étrange Monsieur Merson", Rennes, Musée des beaux-arts,
December 2008-March 2009, p.155).
