EARLY NINETEENTH CENTURY FRENCH SCHOOL. "Chasseur à cheval de la Garde impériale en petite tenue." Large rectangular gouache marked lower right "Russei" (minor wear and moisture stains). 33 x 21 cm. Under glass. Mahogany veneered frame. A.B.E. First Empire period (circa 1804). History: Our gouache is the work of a miniaturist. The particularly fine treatment of the face and the hand leave no doubt about it. Russe or Russei could designate the author of the work. A miniaturist named Russa or Ruzza, who was active during the Empire and painted military portraits, is to be found in the collections of the Nancy Museum (information provided by Mr. Dimitri Gorchkoff, whom we thank for his help).
