SHULAWITZA KOHANA Cholawitze kachina Fire kachina (Colton 151) Wood, pigments, string, wool, feather North America, USA, Arizona, Zuni. H : 30 cm Around 1980/90 Provenance and geographical origin according to the owner: Santa Fe, B.Will Knappen gallery, acquired in the 1990s. Shulawitsa is the personification of the fire spirit. Rather than a costume, the dancer has his body coated with corn charcoal mixed with water and ground with his hands. He carries a bow and arrow and appears in Pamuya (kiva dance) on the first mesa. On the second mesa, he corresponds to Kokosori among the Hopi (Colton n°9).
